Identifying a user can be achieved using the following types of reader technologies.
Keypads - These can be either have one generic pin for all users or individual pins for users. This type of reader technology is generally used in low security applications but is convenient and easy to use.
Fingerprint readers - access can be granted to a site if the fingerprint is approved. This is a secure method of access control.
The following reader technologies use cards or tokens needed to gain entry.
Proximity readers are devices capable of reading swipe cards sand tokens. They are quick and easy to operate and have a range of between 8cm and 3 metres. This particular type of access control can be really useful in large organisations and the swipe cards and tokens can act as ID cards.
Swipe cards - this type of reader uses a swipe card and magnetic strip to gain access to a site. The cards can also be made to act as as a personal ID card.
Token readers use a key ring type token that need to be touched onto the reader in order to gain access. They are really quick and east to use but are not as secure as the token could potentially be lost.
